This was for a Homes & Antiques feature about antiques centres, those fabulous labyrinthine places filled with different specialists, packed with treasures of all shapes and sizes. The brief was to create a frieze along the bottom of several spreads, so the challenge was how to showcase all those big and small items, and reflect the idea that these places could be a one stop shop for furnishing your home.
I’m a big fan of Mary Blair, the American artist whose work for Walt Disney is, to me at least, the epitome of 50s decorative art.
I thought I’d make this a homage to her style, and pepper the spreads with some more “Joe Berger-ish” figures…
